Chicago Hall of Fame blues great Freddie Dixon has just returned from a successful tour of Brazil, where the bassist-vocalist performed eight shows in nine days.
“Freddie Dixon’s tour of Brazil concluded with resounding success,” said promoter Adrian Flores. who also played drums in Dixon’s band during theeight shows he played important events here such as the 13th Mississippi Delta Blues Festival in Caxias do Sul; the 2nd Mercado Blues Festival in Itajai; the 4th Wox International Blues Festival in Pomerode; and the 1st Pacific Blues Festival in Penha.
The band that backed him (Dixon) consisted of Alejandro Bravo and Alejandro Migoni on guitars (both coming directly from Argentina) and Adrian Flores on drums, who provided the raw Chicago blues sound that Freddie needed. “The presentations were an absolute success,” adds Flores. “We’ll definitely be doing it again.”
“The main thing that was not suprprising to me is that the Blues is an art form that is appreciated around the wrold, “ says Dixon about the tour. “When I was touring Brazil, the languages spoken ranged from Portugese to Spansih. One thing for sure is that people may not understand all the words to the songs, but they sure can feel the Blues in theri heart and soul. The band members I played with were not born in the US, they were all from Argentina and Brazil. It was a grand experience to go into a country and be appreciated for a universal love of the Blues”, concludes Dixon

The respected longtime bluesman and son of Blues legend Willie Dixon has been in the news of late, not only filming a TV interview with Blues Against Hunger this past week (airdate tba), but also doing an interview with the Mojo Monday radio show on KWVH-FM that aired this week. Dixon has been taking his eclectic blues group on the road of late, performing in Clarksdale, MS during this year’s King Biscuit Blues Festival, among other locations.
The Freddie Dixon Blues Band consist of the aforementioned Dixon on bass and lead vocals; Bob Lassandrello, guitar; Tom Stober, guitar; Judy Lei, violin; and Grant Neibergall, percussion. Special Guest Doktu Rhute also performs on guitar. Also appearing: The Dixon Vixen (poet) and chanteuse, Janet X(tra).
Freddie Dixon is the embodiment of the Blues. The second son of the world-famous Seventh Son Willie Dixon, Freddie has been surrounded by the Blues since the day he was born. His father is a Blues legend as a songwriter, producer, and musician, at the helm of Chess Records for many of the sides cut in the 1950’s, 60s, and into the 70’s. Freddie began his career learning his chops playing with many musicians in Chicago’s numerous South-side Blues clubs. He was soon hired to play in his father’s band, The Chicago Blues All-Stars, and traveled around the world spreading the Gospel of the Blues. He continues to perform as Freddie Dixon and the Chicago Blues All-Stars.
The proverbial torch was handed to Freddie in the early 1990’s when Willie Dixon passed away. Since then, Freddie has continued as a Blues Ambassador, playing in front of crowds from Europe to Australia, as well as locally in Chicago. In 2020, Freddie — along with Chicago Blues legends John Watkins and Maurice John Vaughan — produced a well-received two-disc CD called 3By3 (available here).
